American Chic

Take a glance at all the press coverage Steven Gambrel has received over the past few years, and you will read descriptions like, "Yankee Hip," "The New American," "Making History," and "American Idyll." The Virginia-bred designer has an architecture degree from the University of Virginia, and a serious grasp of history. (Thomas Jefferson is an influence.) But Gambrel's use of color and fabric, not to mention his inspired mix of furniture, gives his interiors a very youthful, fresh vibe. No "Williamsburger" rooms here.

Steven Gambrel is so great! Isn't this the house that Ruthie Sommers redid? I recognize that blue foyer! It is so fun to see the previous decor!

Katie, yes, I'm pretty sure it is the same place :)

You may have noticed, I'm quite a Gambrel fan. His interiors are fresh and focused - everything to me seems to be just right, but not over-studied. There is always something about them that when you deconstruct it doesn't seem that tricky, but the combination is inspired. And his color sense is genius.
