Island Living in Vogue

All photography above, Arthur Elgort for Vogue; Sittings Editor, Hamish Bowles.

If the upcoming book, Vogue Living: Houses, Gardens, People, includes Hamish Bowles's past features for American Vogue, I really hope the editorial spread shown above -- the Harbour Island home of India Hicks and David Flint Wood, circa 1997 -- will be among them. This was probably my favorite spread from any magazine in the 90s (hence the dogeared tear sheets.) Back then, I immediately flipped for the horizontal pink stripes in the living room. I love those still, but today I appreciate how India incorporated many of her father David Hicks's trademarks -- symmetry, interesting tablescapes, classic lines with vibrant color, crisp white mirror set against hot pink wall -- into a very easy-going child-friendly home.

Hey there, happened to see you'd recommended a book on Florence Broadhurst on thisnext.com. I'm wondering if that book would be good for gathering images, I love her prints and am looking to some crafty art ideas. Thanks!

Hi Laura,
The book has images of her textile designs but it also fouces on her life story. If you just want to see a full range of her prints, try visiting weegohome.com

I adore this house. I lust over it everytime I open my copy of Island Life but you have included some images I haven't seen before so thank you - I love the top image of her in the pink skirt which constrasts so beautifully with the stunning white balustrading!! What a treat it was today on Stylecourt!!

Love the dining room with the wall full of various framed photos. I love beautiful black and white pics that tell the story of life but having them all around the house seems a bit egotistical. Her way of displaying them in mass but in one room seems perfect!

Sarah,
Great point.

Lovely and classic - even ten years later. Such an interesting family. India was a flower girl in Charles & Diana's wedding.
