Mother-of-Pearl: A Tradition in Asian Lacquer opens December 2 at The Metropolitan Museum of Art. Shown above is one of the many exquisite objects included in the exhibition, a rectangular box with "Peach Blossom Grotto" from China, Yuan - early Ming dynasty, 14th to early 15th century. It is black lacquer with mother-of-pearl inlay and 13 inches long.
