I love seeing a large scale print with a complex repeat made up in upholstery. So this ottoman project has been really rewarding. Home Couture's stylized Indian-inspired floral, "Contessa," has many interesting twists and turns. It's nice to be able to enjoy it from all sides.
To some extent the big old fashioned ottoman below, from Vogue 2006, was my inspiration. I was aiming for something soft and timeless. A cushy focal point. As always, my upholsterer Atlanta Craftsman was a dream to work with. (404) 352-4400.

Oh good Kelly! I'm so glad. Thanks for the positive input.
That is a great looking print and on the perfect piece of furniture!
Thanks Alyssa! Glad you like it too.
I can't believe that little wooden stool turned into such a fabulous thing. Inspiring.
Hi Balsamfir,
I should clarify! I opted to go with something bigger :)
This was made from scratch. But you could cover a stool like that previously posted one for the same look. I asked and they said sure!
I love your fabric posts because I know nothing about it. You're my first stop when I need to research fabric or find inspiration to fabric links and resources. Thank you so, so much.
Oh Decorno, thanks! It's really helpful to hear that. So glad you let me know.
Speaking of fabric tips, one thing to keep in mind if you are new to custom upholstery:
large prints often require more yardage because of the complexity of matching up the repeat, thus it can be disappointing to find out how much you have to buy :)
THAT is also so helpful because I am about to reupholster a chair and am thinking of a large-ish print.
I may have missed something like this, but do you have (or would you consider writing) a post "Fabric for Beginners"? I would love that.
I'll put something together next week. Good idea.
Ditto, ditto, to all above. The ottoman looks wonderful! Can't wait to read your fabric post next week. Have a great weekend!
you too jude! thanks!
Courtney - congrats! It looks perfect!!!! I agree with you about yardage. A large print on a chair or couch can up the yardage tremendously over a solid fabric. As good prints are usually more expensive than solids, it can make the price prohibitive. The woman who does my measurements and bidding always has to know the sise of repeat first before she can give me an estimate. When using something like Bennison or kime at $150 or $200 a yard, the addition of 10 yards can make something cost an extra $1000!!!
did the new piece go in your guest room or your room?
Joni, so glad it meets your approval! I'm serious, that's a big complement because you know your stuff!!
Yes, it's in my own bedroom.
Thanks for sharing your tips too.
I absolutely love the piece and the fabric you chose, Courtney! Couldn't have turned out any prettier.
Thanks Anne! i'm happy you think it works too :)
I think the ottoman looks gorgeous. Congratulations!
I have a large-scale Hinson crewel that I want to use on a wing-back chair, but I have yet to find the right chair. I want something cozy but still clean-lined (a straight Edwardian leg rather than a Queen Anne). You seem to have such a knack with upholstery and fabric, I wonder if you can suggest a good source for a new chair.
Thanks!
Thanks Elizabeth!
I'm thinking Baker has some great choices -- maybe Oly Studio too.
Let me check. I also love to look at vintage options and www.mecoxgardens.com
Courtney- The ottoman looks great!!! The size and shape are perfect, and I love the blue trim that you chose.
Thanks Jennifer! I truly appreciate the input :)
It looks truly beautiful and so stylish! Love it!!

Ah, yes, sorry I missed this the first time, I was on "Spring Break." Probably chugging a beer bong as you were publishing. It looks fabulous - no surprise - I adore the contrast trim at the bottom. Just right.
Patricia and Anna,
Again it's great to receive this input from the pros!! Thank you.
do you know which style number or colorway of contessa you used? thanks!
Hi anon,
Sorry, I don't know the style number. It may have been called "multi" it's orange, olive, chocolate-brown and aqua and beige tones.
Good luck!
