Ideas From Barrie Benson

No doubt by now you've seen the latest Domino, and you know that North Carolina-based decorator Barrie Benson is an ace at freshening up traditional Southern style. Her take on this master bedroom, for Parker and Stephen Shuford, just opened my eyes to yet another fabric I might mix with a bedroom chair covered in Kelly Wearstler's "Imperial Trellis." (Benson opted for a soft Cowtan & Tout floral on the bed, and used "Trellis" in citrine for curtains.)

Below, I love Benson's twist on the classic wall of plates. Here she used a pattern I posted last year, Hermes' "Balcon du Guadalquivir," in Magazine Week.

Also, I know this other Benson-designed bedroom above is oft-blogged, but I wanted to mention that Mandarin on Miami Circle, in Atlanta, has vintage Chinese screens very similar to the ones Benson used here for headboards (if you seek an alternative to West Elm's.)

Interior design above by Southerner Barrie Benson, as seen at Domino online. Top photo, Justin Bernhaut. Second and third, Laura Resen.

Hi Courntey!! I LOOOVVVEEE that first bedroom pic w/ the trellis drapes. Aqua and "citrine" is my all time favorite combination. The colors of my living room. Even doing a tufted headboard in the material you used on the back of your KWID chair would be fabulous. Then you could do pillows in a fun print to mix it up. I always like headboards that are solid. It's so fun to add new pillows!!!

Great post! My Domino arrived in the mail today. I can't wait to read it.

I love your bedroom related posts! I have decided to go for a solid on my headboard (going to ADAC next week to find the perfect shade), then use a great print on the pillows, as Kelly D. suggested.

What do you think of a love seat at the base of the bed? I prefer a bench. I guess it depends on the shape and flow of the room.

Sarah,

Thanks first of all for your positive comments -- very appreciated!

I agree, in the end solid headboards are like a classic white blouse -- you can't go wrong. It's just fun to ponder all the options for a while :)

If I had a room with enough space, I think a loveseat could be quite cozy, esp. with that fire place. But benches do seem very practical (have to have a spot for those stacks of books.)

Hope you have success at ADAC!

Such a nice post Courtney. I posted Benson's garden a few days ago. I really like her style and the way she puts things together. Love the photographs and what you wrote :) Best~R

p.s. I noticed your chair could actually be in her bedroom, the wall colors are so similar and the fabric... is the same.

Thanks Robyn!

Oh! I can hardly wait for my Domino to get here. Looks like another great one. Robyn is right! The wall color looks the same as yours! Very pretty fabric combination.

Great post - thanks for giving me a little snippet of what to expect in my domino this month - as you know I always get it so much later than you!! Lovely images - I still loving seeing your imperial trellis chair and can't wait to see how the room comes together with the head board and bed cushions! Oh and I love the coral coloured cane table in between the beds in the last image!

Wow--what a gorgeous post! I am loving the combination of that Cowtan & Tout with the KWID trellis and white monogrammed linens. The top room is perfection! I am now anxiously awaiting my Domino even more.

Do you know that fabric used on the beds and bedskirts? It's lovely.

At this point I don't know the exact pattern name, of the floral, just the maker, C & T.

This room was part of a Domino "web extra" related to Benson. Domino does have a forum (well actually an email contact too) for tracking down product details.
